BUILD TO BILL — THE BUTTON CLICKED. DID THE RIGHT THING HAPPEN?
Free repair exercise / edition 1 / October 11, 2026

START HERE
This is an intentionally broken copy of Rinse, a fictional detailing website.
One service button moves you to the form but fails to select its service.
Your job: reproduce the problem, make one small repair, and check the other buttons.
No account, hosting, API key or installation is required. Use a computer, browser
and plain-text editor. An AI assistant is optional. Nothing in this practice form
sends information or books a service. Use made-up entries. Do not publish this
broken exercise as a client website.

1. OPEN AND OBSERVE
Extract the entire ZIP: Windows “Extract All,” or open the ZIP on macOS.
Keep index.html, style.css, app.js, delivery.js and assets together.
Open index.html in your browser. Choose Outside: the form should select The Outside.
Choose Inside: the page moves to the form, but the service becomes blank.
Choose Whole Car: the form should select The Whole Car.
Write your expected and actual results before changing anything.

2. SAVE A COPY
Duplicate the extracted rinse-repair folder and call the copy rinse-repair-working.
Keep the original so you can start again. Open the working copy's index.html in
both your browser and plain-text editor. The browser displays it; the editor
changes it. Save in the editor and refresh the browser after each edit.

3. ASK A SMALL QUESTION
If using AI, attach the working index.html and app.js to your own assistant and say:

In this fictional practice site, Choose Outside and Choose Whole Car select the
correct service. Choose Inside moves to the form but leaves its service blank.
Find the cause. Propose the smallest repair, show the exact changed line, and
explain why it works. Keep the form in practice mode. Do not redesign the page,
add dependencies or change unrelated content. Tell me which checks to repeat.

Inspect the proposed change before accepting it. You only need to repair the
service-selection mismatch. If the assistant returns a replacement file, keep
the same filename and folder. Avoid index.html.txt. Do not run terminal commands
or install anything to complete this exercise.

4. RETEST THE RESULT
After saving and refreshing, check all three buttons, including the two that
worked before. Each should select the matching service and focus the Name field.
Use Tab and Enter to activate a service button too. Complete a practice inquiry
with Alex Example, alex@example.com, an example vehicle and made-up area. The
summary should show the selected service and say “Practice inquiry ready.”
Nothing was sent. Reloading clears the summary. Restore your original copy if
the repair causes a new problem.

The buttons carry data-service values. app.js copies that value into the service
dropdown. Compare the Inside button's value with the dropdown's option text.

SOLUTION
In index.html, change data-service="Interior" to data-service="The Inside".
Do not change the visible button label or rename the dropdown option.
The button and option must agree. This is one local repair, not proof that an
entire website is ready for a client. The deliberate bug was made for teaching;
it is not a real customer's incident.

WHAT COMES NEXT?
The full Rinse project adds eight written browser lessons: controlled edits,
content, publishing, a verified inquiry route, review and handoff. It uses your
own AI assistant and Netlify account, with provider usage costs/limits separate.
It has no videos, personal coaching, client leads or visual client editor.
